About Riverable Canada
Riverable Canada was built to empower wilderness canoeists, recreational kayakers, whitewater rafters, fly anglers, and leisure tubers across all 10 provinces and 3 territories. We answer the essential river runner’s question: "Is the river flowing safely today, or will we scrape bottom?"
Our Open Hydrometric Data Stack
We ingest and synthesize live observational data from authoritative scientific and governmental bodies:
- Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) / Water Survey of Canada (WSC): Real-time volumetric discharge ($m^3/s$ or cms) and water level stage ($m$) from more than 2,500 active telemetry stations across the country via the Meteorological Service of Canada (MSC) GeoMet OGC API.
- Open-Meteo Atmospheric Models: High-resolution weather forecasts, hourly air temperature, wind gust speeds, and trailing 7-day watershed precipitation accumulation.
- OpenStreetMap (Overpass API): Public canoe put-ins, public boat launches, take-out egress points, and local outfitter liveries.
- RainViewer Doppler Radar: Real-time high-resolution radar precipitation overlays for spotting incoming convective storm fronts.
Provisional Real-Time Data & Safety
Real-time hydrometric readings published by the Water Survey of Canada are provisional and subject to subsequent review and quality control. Natural river systems can be altered rapidly by heavy mountain runoff, sudden snowmelt, ice jams, beaver dams, or unannounced dam operations.
Always visually inspect rapid sections before launching, consult official provincial flood advisories, and comply with Canadian federal water safety laws by wearing a Transport Canada-approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD) or lifejacket.
